On June 6, 2025, we celebrated a milestone event in underwater robotics research: the inauguration of a new testing pool. This unique facility, unmatched at the national level, represents a qualitative leap forward for our research group, solidifying our capacity to lead innovative projects both nationally and internationally.
With a depth of five meters, the pool features state-of-the-art technology, including underwater lighting, submerged cameras, and an observation room with panoramic windows. These advanced features allow us to recreate marine conditions in a controlled environment, facilitating the development and validation of new technologies before their real-world deployment. This facility will support research projects focused on marine exploration and preservation, underwater archaeology, and renewable energy.
This achievement has been made possible thanks to support and funding from the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the European Union, through the NextGenerationEU funds, as part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR).
A key highlight of the event was the announcement of our ambition to designate the CIRS as a Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS). This recognition, granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, would establish our center as a national and international benchmark, enhancing opportunities for collaboration and access to funding for research projects.
